Artist Biography - Sidney Guberman (1936-)
Born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1936, Sidney Guberman moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, during his early childhood. He attended the Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs and the Phillips Exeter Academy. He studied under Lew Tilley and Jean Charlot in Colorado Springs before studying painting at Princeton under Stephen Greene; he graduated from Princeton in 1958. Sidney earned a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967. He returned to painting full-time in 1971.
Guberman received an individual grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980 and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1988. His work has appeared in multiple one-man and group exhibitions internationally. He has taught at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Lausanne (1971-73), Ecole Polytechnique Federale (1973-75), Princeton University (1980-81), the University of South Carolina (1990), and the Atlanta College of Art (1990).
