Early Colorado mountain landscape painting, vintage turn of the century original artwork by Charles Stewart Stobie. Oil on canvas in a traditional style depicting a prospector with burro in a landscape with snowy peaks of the Rocky Mountains and pine trees. Signed by the artist and dated, 1900, lower right.
Presented in a custom hand-carved gold leaf frame, outer dimensions measure 24 ¾ x 31 x 1 ¾ inches. Image size is 18 x 24 inches.

Artist Biography - Charles Stobie (1845-1931)

Charles Stewart Stobie was born 1845 in Baltimore, Maryland and he died 1931 in Chicago, Illinois. He studied art at Saint Andrews, Scotland. Stobie, one of the earliest Denver painters, was also an Indian scout and buffalo hunter. Among his friends were William Cody, Wild Bill Hickock, and Frederick Remington. Stobie lived with Utes in Colorado and contributed a painting, Crossing the Plains to Colorado in 1865.
