Artist Biography - Lawrence Barrett (1897-1973)

Lawrence Barrett was an etcher, lithographer, teacher, illustrator, sculptor, writer, and painter. Born in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Barrett was a student at the Broadmoor Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado beginning in 1920. He studied under Robert Reid, John F. Carlson, Ernest Lawson, Randall Davey, Boardman Robinson, and Charles Locke.

Barrett was an instructor of lithography and etching at the Broadmoor Academy (Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center) from 1938-1952. He collaborated with noted American artists who taught at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, including George Biddle, Adolf Dehn, Arnold Blanch, and Boardman Robinson. Barrett was awarded the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1940. He co-authored a book with Adolf Dehn in 1946 titled "How to Draw and Print Lithographs." Barrett won an award for his 1966 bronze Bucking Horse.
