Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Lillian Thoele studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the St. Louis School of Fine Art and the Chester Springs Summer School, Saugatuck, Michigan. She was elected as a member of the Federated International Artist's League in 1962. In addition to painting, Thoele worked as a commercial artist, illustrator and designer.
