About the Artist
Born in New York, in 1899, Gerald Davis (Gerald Vivian Davis) studied drawing in Berne, Switzerland. He went on to study in Paris at the Academie Julian, L'ecole des Beaux-Arts and Le Grande Chaumiere. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and Societe Nationale des Beaux Artes.
Following his studies in France, Davis taught at the University of Illinois as well as the University of Kansas. During this time, he befriended fellow artist, Thomas Hart Benton.
Davis and his wife relocated to Paris in 1929 and he exhibited at galleries in London, Copenhagen and Paris as well as the 1937 World's Fair. In 1942, the couple returned to the United States in 1942 and settled permanently in New Jersey.
