Chappell, Warren 

Warren Chappell
Born Viginia, 1904
Died 1991

Born in Richmond, Virginia, Warren Chappell was a designer, graphic artist, book illustrator, narrative and genre painter, and teacher. He received his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Richmond. From 1926-1928, he studied at the Art Students League of New York with George Bridgman and Allen Lewis. At the Art Students League, he was a student and a monitor, while also serving on the Board of Control from 1927-1931. He studied in Germany at Offenbacher Werkstatt with Rudolf Koch from 1931-1932.

Chappell taught at the Art Students League of New York from 1932-1935, where he was a colleague of Charles Locke. He also taught at the Broadmoor Art Academy from 1935-1936.

In 1935, he wrote The Anatomy of Lettering, and in the late 1930’s he authored Illustrations Made with a Tool. In 1970, he wrote A Short History of the Printed Word. He illustrated numerous works, including The History of Tom Jones (Illustrated Modern Library, 1943) and The Complete Novels of Jane Austen (Random House, 1950).
